.gitignore Generator

Tick your languages, frameworks, OS and editor to get a lean, de-duplicated .gitignore that keeps .env files and private keys out by default.

Runs in your browser: input and output are never sent to the server, and the platform does not store your input.

How to use

  1. 1Tick the languages and frameworks the project uses, plus your own OS and editor.
  2. 2Add project-specific paths under “Other rules” if you need them.
  3. 3Download it as .gitignore at the repo root — ideally before the first commit.

FAQ

I added a .gitignore — why does git status still show the file?

.gitignore only affects untracked files. Remove an already committed file from tracking with git rm --cached <file>, then commit again.

Why is .env.example kept?

.env.example lists the variables without real values and is meant to be committed. The rules ignore every .env.* file and then re-include it with !.env.example.

Should lock files (package-lock.json, Cargo.lock) be ignored?

No. Lock files make everyone and CI install the same versions, so they belong in the repo, and none of these templates ignore them.

Is my input uploaded?

No. Everything is generated in your browser; no sign-in and no quota.
